Mashed Yellow Turnips (Rutabagas) with Crispy Shallots

After watching Thanksgiving Live, I wanted to try out this recipe from Ina Garten. I thought it would be part of a nice, easy meal before Thanksgiving on Thursday, but dinner ended up taking 3 hours with 6 different pots on the stove top. Child please.

These were pretty good, however. Basically just like mashed potatoes (creamy, gooey texture loaded with butter).

Dish Mashed Yellow Turnips (Rutabagas) with Crispy Shallots
Recipe Source Ina Garten
Difficulty 6 / 10 – Not difficult, but lots of steps
Time to Complete ~2 hours
Sides Served Served this with the stuffed Acorn Squash
Leftovers? Yes
Lessons Learned Turnips mash up just like potatoes, though they are much healthier
Any Recipe Deviations? Nope
Make Again? Eh – maybe. Nice substitute for mashed potatoes, but it’s not like we make mashed potatoes very often anyway. Emily liked these a lot though
Changes Next Time? The shallots took forever to get crispy. You should not lower the heat of the oil to low – keep it on medium-low, perhaps even raise it.
